On Wednesday the Connecticut State Legislature opened its session and I hope that repeal of the death penalty is on the agenda.
The death penalty is a flawed public policy and there are many reasons for repealing it in favor of life in prison without the possibility of release -- ever! There is always the possibility of executing an innocent person (138 exonerations to date), plus the fact that the imposition of the death penalty sets in motion a legal process that will go on for decades. During that time the families of the victims will endure countless reminders of the tragedy along with unbearable heartache and sorrow.
The taking of life is horrible whether it is committed by a fiend or supported legally by the state.
Life in prison without the possibility of release -- ever -- is the appropriate sentence and a just punishment for these horrific crimes against humanity.
