The Arizona Board of Executive Clemency on Friday voted against commuting the
death sentence of Robert Towery, who is scheduled to be executed Thursday for
the murder of a Paradise Valley man 2 decades ago.
Towery, 47, was sentenced to death for the 1991 murder of Mark Jones, 68,
during a robbery. Towery and an accomplice went to Jones' house, pretending
that their car had broken down and that they needed to use the phone. They held
Jones at gunpoint for 2 hours while they searched the house for valuables.
Then, Towery put a zip tie around Jones' neck and strangled him.
